On Trail with BFGoodrich!

Over the summer weekend, Fly Offroad got to enjoy some scenic adventures with the BFGoodrich team and friends of BFG in the Tahoe National Forest. Gathering with friends from around the country, the BFG weekend warriors headed to Fordyce Trail.

Fordyce is rated as a “hard” difficulty and for capable rigs with lockers, larger tires, and experienced wheeling knowledge. This trail is 11.9 miles long ending in Meadow Lake Forest Road and had everything a wheeling enthusiast would want. From tight maneuvering turns in between the thick pines, to large steep boulder climbs and descents, steel rock formations, beautiful scenic valleys through the trail, to deep water crossings that ever change from the controlled flow rate of Fordyce Creek.

With Fordyce being a new trail for the Fly Offroad team, what better way to take control of the wheeling adventure then mapping the trail location, directions to the trail head, and on trail information, milestones, and mile markers along the way with BFGoodrich’s new app for the wheeling enthusiast, OnTrail.

We started the trek with long time BFG legend Tom Ways leading the pack as we ventured down into the trail. With Tim and Jonathan from BFG mid pack, Gerald Lee of Savvy Offroad brought up the rear. In-between the BFG fleet consisted of drivers from all over the US, coast to coast bringing every aspect of wheeling machine to the adventure. As each rig brought their own talented drivers and rigs Fly Offroad brought our newest creation: The General. This is the first trial by fire run for the 2013, 4 door Jeep JKU. We were the smallest tire size on trail with our BFGoodrich KX DOT Krawlers. This weekend warrior was born to be on the trails.

With John from the Proving Grounds Racing behind the wheel. The Fly Offroad JK blazed through the trails with a few minor setback on high centering and not having locker capabilities to push through the harder sections. Big thanks to our partners Factor 55 and Warn Industries for their soft shackle and winching equipment we never stayed off track long! With help from the Rock Slide Engineering boys and Sergio and Gerald with Savvy we enjoyed laughs all the way down the trail wheeling this rig and choosing adequate lines for the vehicle’s capabilities. John mentions, “It’s not a race car where you can point and shoot up the hill with 40’s, lockers, and horsepower. This is back to good ol’ grassroots wheeling and driving off-road. What a blast!”

While trekking through the trail the narrow road blossoms into an open rock garden while the sound of the rushing river can be seen and heard in the background. This trail has multiple crossings of the river and, depending on the flow rate, could be unpassable in some lighter lower rigs. Crossing one by one we made sure every vehicle stayed in motion during each river crossing. What is great is that each milestone on the trail we hit the BFG On Trial app had it marked. Even each ‘winch hill’ location noting the most difficult of areas while on the trail. Making it to the other side of the river, we took a break to enjoy views, laughs, and some good eats as we approached the half way mark on the trail. With more obstacles to go, we proceeded on!

The trail is an in and out style OHV path. Meaning, you can either take the highway back to the campground, or turn around and cruise up the trail the way we came and end back at camp. Well, no one wants to take the easy way out! So as we entered into the final water crossing we geared up to make the turning point with the group for the remainder of the trail ride. Being the deepest water crossing, and one large obstacle to go, a select few of the group battled the current to cross and show their skills on the remaining waterfall obstacles. Being on 37’s and no lockers we stayed put with the half of the group while the adventurous built machines tried their luck on the deep current and steep waterfall for the last obstacle!

Returning was just as difficult! Not having gravity on our side we had to drive up most every obstacle and winch hill location. Pulling line on winch hill three was our weakness! No shame in it either, we knew it was the safest thing to do to keep the group moving. Some obstacles just were too much for The General this round. Following towards the front after being turned around we followed Tom’s and Alex’ lines as we crawled our way out of the rocky paths and waterfalls. Moving all day long the BFG’s did excellent on staying connected as we ventured through the trail.

As we near the end with camp in site the crew all returns unscathed. Some rock rash and stories to tell are definitely things to take away from this trip. As we end the evening with dinner, and complementary ice cream from the Savvy crew we had time to catch up with the other groups and drivers to talk about their day, experiences, and what they thought of the newest BFG OnTrail app!

We had an amazing camping trip and trek with the BFGoodrich crew. What an opportunity to try out the new app, and wheel with great leaders in the industry, learning more about the BFG tire brand, tires, and history. As the Fly team returns home, there is no time to waste, Ultra4 in Crandon is calling!
